Weekend Getaway: Highlands, NC

After several busy months, my friend and I decided we needed a girls getaway weekend. So we headed to Highlands, NC – located in the western corner of North Carolina – in search of rest and peaceful mountain views. We stayed 15-minutes outside of downtown Highlands at The Fire Mountain Inn. The Inn is nestled atop a mountain, surrounded by green rolling hills, a babbling brook and 180-degree mountain views. There couldn’t have been a more perfect setting to chat for hours, sip wine and watch the dreamiest sunsets.

When Heather and I checked in, the owners of Fire Mountain Inn kindly provided us with ample hiking & dining recommendations for the Highlands area (see below for the list). But we loved the views at Fire Mountain Inn so much that we skipped some of the hikes we had planned. Truthfully, I could have spent all weekend in our sunny room reading a book and enjoying the mountain breeze and gorgeous views from the bed, loveseat, porch or even the soaking tub.

Around the corner from our room was the coziest library with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Appalachian Mountains.

On Saturday, we had dinner reservations at the inn’s incredible Fire + Water Restaurant followed by drinks on the fire + water viewing deck at sunset. Dinner was beyond incredible – my expectations were far exceeded. I’m still dreaming about the juicy steak and grapefruit avocado salad I had. The ingrediants are all locally sourced by the chef, Matthew, who is also one of the owners.

Each morning we enjoyed an elaborate, fresh breakfast in the dining room (with plenty of coffee, of course).

We spent Sunday exploring downtown Highlands, chasing waterfalls and going on a few hikes. Highlands boasts no bugs and perfect weather (70 degrees Fahrenheit) all summer long. What a dream!
