Cabo Getaway Guide

In September of last year, Covid cases were improving and travel was feeling quite a bit safer. I had just gone through a traumatic pregnancy loss & my husband booked flights to Mexico as a very needed “griefcation”.

For years, I had been keeping a close eye on a boutique hotel in Todos Santos, Mexico. Even since it was under construction, Hotel San Cristobal has been high on my hotel wishlist. The design is incredible & they boast a relaxed pace.. plus, they don’t allow kids or babies, so I knew it would be the perfect spot.

We were both able to quarantine before and after the trip. We flew directly to Cabo with Delta, who blocked off all middle seats. This made us feel so much safer. Our hotels checked temperatures of each guest upon every entry to the property (and did not allow others on the property). All staff wore masks and were constantly sanitizing surfaces around the property. The common spaces were never crowded and we were always able to social distance. It could not have been a better experience for our first trip post-Covid.

Upon landing in Cabo, we picked up a rental car at Hertz and drove the 30 minutes to our hotel. It had been a few years since we’d been to Mexico and I forgot how much the staff at the rental car companies push additional insurance policies. We already had insurance through our credit card, so the Hertz policy wasn’t necessary. But the friendly faces behind the counter are incredibly persuasive and a gentleman had us convinced that we needed a $300 add-on to our pre-paid car. Instead of standing our ground, we had pool-side margaritas on-the-brain and handed over our credit card. So my tips is: don’t go into vacation mode until after you’re in your rental car 🙂

Before heading to Todos Santos for 4 days, I wanted to experience a quick stay in Cabo. After much deliberation over many incredible hotels, I booked a room at The Cape and could not have been happier with this choice. The Cape was absolutely worth every penny. Their staff was incredible, the food (& drinks) were delicious and the views can’t be beat. Don’t even get me started on the luxurious rooms and spa-like bathrooms! I would definitely book another stay at The Cape in a heartbeat. Between the restaurants, rooftop bar, pools and sandy beach, it made it hard to want to leave the property for any excursions.

While in Cabo, we took advantage of our rental car & drove 30-minutes to Acre for dinner. I’m salivating just thinking about that farm-to-table meal under palm trees. If you have transportation or don’t mind grabbing a cab, a meal at Acre is a MUST.

We also booked an afternoon sailboat tour with Cabo Sailing Ocean Adventures. There were only two other couples on board (with plenty of space for social distancing). However, if it had been more crowded I probably would have splurged on a private tour. The only negative portion of our experience was that one of the girls on board decided to DJ and had the absolute worst taste in music. She chose nothing but the most explicit and raunchy rap music. Finally, the rest of us spoke up and requested she choose something a bit more tasteful. But I do wish the staff had taken the playlist control away from her much, much sooner.

PS – we chose to drive to the Marina rather than pay for the shuttle offered by Cabo Sailing (to minimize exposure to other people). I asked our hotel for tips on where to park. They directed us to a parking deck that was only a 5-minute walk to the dock. Easy-peasy!

After our afternoon on the water, we headed directly to Todos Santos (1.5 hours north) for the remainder of our trip. Don’t be intimidated by the drive. It’s a well-paved four lane highway with clear directions & barely any traffic.

Hotel San Cristobal exceeded every one of my expectations. It was the serene stay I was hoping for. I lost count of how many margaritas I ordered poolside — they were that good!

I wasn’t impressed with downtown Todos Santos.. we only spent about an hour there and were eager to get back to our hotel. However, I did enjoy our dinner out at Jazamango. Another must-try spot if you have eating restrictions.
